Faith-Filled Fun: How to Keep Kids Engaged in God’s Word All Summer

How to keep kids engaged in God's Word all Summer

As summer approaches and routines shift, it’s easy for children’s spiritual engagement to slide. But with a little creativity, Children’s Worship Bulletins can keep kids connected to scripture all season long—whether they are at church, on vacation, or enjoying downtime at home. Children’s Worship Bulletins may just be the simple solution you’ve been looking for to keep kids thinking about God this summer.

Summer Devotional Packet

Summertime can be a bit of a paradox—we wind down from the schedules and hectic routines of the school year, only to shift into a season of freedom, boredom, and sometimes too much screen time during the long, warm days. Problem solved! Add both excitement and spiritual focus with a summer devotional packet, using a collection of educational and faith-based materials from the Children’s Worship Bulletins website. Choose a theme or topic to stimulate children’s brains, encourage spiritual growth, and build meaningful family bonds. Having time together around God’s Word will improve family connections, build faith, and teach children to show kindness and love. Simply download and print the materials. Set a weekly time and include your family, or invite children from the neighborhood or church to participate. Make it fun by finishing the session by completing a craft, making ice cream sundaes, or enjoying homemade lemonade!

Supplement VBS and summer camps resources with Children's Worship Bulletins

VBS and Summer Camp

Children’s Worship Bulletins has a plethora of resources to supplement your VBS and summer camp programs with a great collection of materials, including bulletins for younger and older kids, Bible story guides, crafts, coloring pages, online games, and maps and charts!  When you know your VBS theme, simply use the scripture or the topic search to find available bulletins. Use the “Maps and Charts” and “Lessons” tabs for the other materials.  Don’t forget to check out the VBS & Summer Camp Resources section under the Resources Tab.

Spotlight on Themes

A church subscription can be a valuable tool for children’s ministry teachers to maintain engagement during the summer or while families are on vacation. At the start of the season, consider focusing on a different topic each week or selecting a broader subject to explore over several weeks. Ideas like creation, kindness, or God’s promises offer rich opportunities for learning and reflection. You can also build on stories the children have already learned throughout the year. Each week, send out a related bulletin PDF to reinforce the lesson. Use the topic or scripture search to easily find supporting materials. Involve the whole family when possible to boost participation, and don’t forget to add some fun! Try roasting s’mores or organizing a water balloon evening to celebrate what they’ve learned.

Helping Others

Take children to visit a local nursing home or care facility. Our elders are often very lonely, and a visit from children can bring immense joy! Bring along some cards or home-baked goods. The residents usually love to help and would be honored to join in a scripture reading or to complete a puzzle or activity on a bulletin.

Summer Travel Packs

Varying vacation schedules can make it difficult for children’s ministry workers to keep up with children over the summer, and bulletins can be used to plan a kids’ church on the go. The bulletin puzzles can help the miles fly by if you’re taking a plane or road trip!

Reading Challenges!

Kids love a contest, and a scripture-reading challenge over the summer can offer many benefits. Extra reading can help keep skills sharp for the next school year and help support spiritual growth while they read from God’s Word. Galatians, Ephesians, and Colossians would be very suitable options. Scripture bulletins can work with the reading challenge to enhance learning and reinforce lessons. Offer a small reward or incentive for completed work.

Put Together a Summer “Just-in-case Backpack”

Be ready for spontaneous possibilities! Summertime schedules can sometimes be unexpected, and “just-in-case backpacks” can allow for sudden, unforeseen changes in events such as an impromptu sleepover, a visit to the doctor’s office, or a go-to-work day with Mom or Dad. Always have a supply of Children’s Worship Bulletins and pencils in the backpack ready to fill any waiting hours.

Busy parents can download and print extra bulletins to pop into their bag or purse for unforeseen events.

Children's Worship Bulletins membership provides all the resources you need

With some creative thinking and planning, using these resources can make a significant difference in maintaining those valuable spiritual connections with children over the summer.

We understand that the busyness of summer can feel overwhelming at times. In those moments, we find hope in the promise from Isaiah: “All your children will be taught by the Lord, and great will be their peace.” Isaiah 54:13

Wishing you a blessed, fulfilling, and happy summer!
